History

In 1999, Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs released the Lazy Angle ruler to solve a mathematical challenge of crafting square quilt blocks where the seam runs from the center of a side to the corner of the block.

It’s a popular quilt block that was often crafted with templates or foundation paper piecing. It was a challenge to simply rotary cut the block pieces from fabric strips, until the Lazy Angle Ruler was introduced.

The original Lazy Angle Ruler cut 2 shapes in 6 sizes, up to 6 ½” tall. The Jumbo Lazy Angle Ruler that is available now cuts the shapes in 8 sizes, up to 8 ½” tall. This makeover for a beloved classic quilting ruler gives you a greater range of block sizes and designs to choose from to show off your favorite fabrics.

Some of the first Jaybird Quilts patterns that were available in quilt shops use the Lazy Angle Ruler to make fun, geometrically inspired designs. In the baggage claim of the Houston airport before the kickoff of the 2010 Fall Quilt Market, Joan approached me and asked if I would like to design my next series of quilt patterns using the ruler, and of course I said “Yes!”.

Joan’s guidance gave me the opportunity to grow Jaybird Quilts into a brand well known in the quilting community for bringing simplified design and clarity to geometrically inspired patterns. Now it is my honor and privilege to continue Joan’s Lazy Angle Ruler legacy with the release of the Jumbo Lazy Angle Ruler and Cuppa Tea, the Lazy Angle Sampler Quilt book, to mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the launch of the original Lazy Angle Ruler by Lazy Girl Designs.
